Why protein comes first after surgery

Surgery makes your stomach smaller. What goes into it is still up to you, and with room for a few ounces at a sitting, most care teams ask you to eat the protein first. It keeps you full for longer, and it helps your body hold on to muscle while the weight comes off.

The usual target is 60 g of protein a day or more (your team sets yours), and plenty of people fall short of it. Plain chicken breast gets old in about a week, and shakes do not last much longer. That is usually when the old snacks start creeping back.

High-Protein Bariatric Meals is written for that stretch: salmon in a garlic and lemon pan sauce, turkey taco cups, harissa turkey with roasted carrots. Food you would want to cook anyway, portioned for the plate you have now.

What the first year can look like

Surgery and your care team set the pace. These recipes make the protein-first eating that goes with it easy to keep up.

An illustrative example, not a reader: 260 lb at surgery, gastric sleeve.

  1. First weeks

Liquids, then purées, then soft foods, in the order your care team sets. Small, gentle and protein-first.

  2. The first year

    66 lb lost

25% of body weight, the average one year after a sleeve

Most of the loss comes in these months, and protein helps you hold on to muscle while it does.

  3. After year one

The scale slows and everyday cooking takes over. Prep once a week and keep a protein snack within reach.

Illustrative figures for a 260 lb starting weight, using the average total weight lost one year after surgery: 25.2% for a sleeve and 31.2% for a bypass, across more than 44,000 patients (Arterburn et al., Annals of Internal Medicine, 2018 (opens in a new tab)). Your results depend on your surgery, your body and your care team’s plan. The recipes support that plan; they don’t replace it.
